Albums like this are a bit of a gamble – do you have a diamond in the rough or a cheesy rock outfit that got lucky with their image? This does start off a bit as light rock, but the first song has some shifts that makes you realize you are listening to some progressive rock. Not really like a Rush clone, but there are time changes and flourishes of flutes and other instruments that are definitely prog influenced. The second track is a ballad that has you thinking “cheese,” but the third track comes roaring with some snarling guitars and enough time changes to make you think “we might have a diamond in the rough here?” A bit rough in places – but not bad either. The rest of the songs move between prog rock and ballad – but not a type of ballad that is cheesy. Definitely diamond in the rough.
