I am not sure if this tape is “underground” or not – it seems they were on a label that featured bands already covered here (Xara and Urgent), but that label seems to have possibly been underground? Hard to say for this time period, but these albums tend to have good production values. September probably got the most attention of bands on this label. Their website says they released 7 albums, but I only know of 4 or 5. They evolved from pop rock to 80s rock that featured influences of new wave, AOR, hard rock, and many other 80s styles. Really, the cover says it all about the style. Its really good if you are into 80s music. This was also released on vinyl, and seems to have been re-issued on CD and digital download as well. See also the 1985 Music Special tape that featured music from this tape.

  1. I collect this group. They only have 4 albums as September that I know of, which are listed on the website for purchasing their “official” digital versions of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th albums (https://www.september-music.com/) which, unfortunately, have some audible artifacts on several tracks. Their first album – ‘I’ve Been Thinking’ – was probably never released on CS, or if it was, is much rarer than the vinyl versions as is typically the case for 70s releases from lesser-known CCM artists. Their last 3 albums from ’81 to ’87 are a lot easier to find for a decent price on vinyl, but the CS versions appear to be about as rare as ‘I’ve Been Thinking’ LPs. None of the September albums have been officially released on CD to my knowledge. There are at least 2 CD bootlegs of ‘Lines Are Falling’ that I’ve seen on eBay or elsewhere online over the years. I’ve also seen a CD bootleg of ‘Dreams And Lessons’. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any bootlegs of ‘September First’, but I could be mistaken on that. I am certain I’ve never seen a (CD) bootleg of ‘I’ve Been Thinking’, and would personally jump at the chance to buy any decent rip of that album, bootleg or not, if it was in the right price range (for me, that’s not much more than the cost an an official CD).

Several years ago, the September website linked above also had several demos available for preview on Soundcloud, but they were not indicated as being available for purchase. They have since removed those from the website. It’s too bad because they were mostly all studio quality demos of some previously released songs and several others there were never released…at least, not as September.

Where the claim of 7 albums comes in would be when including additional post-September releases from members of the Kirkland family. September was, in effect, the official Kirkland family band up through the final album in the late 80s. In the mid 90s, the members of September released two additional albums on Ocean Records under the name The Kirklands (‘Fresh Praise’, 1994) and Kirkland (‘Witness Of Love’, 1995). Finally, Dale (Kirkland) Tiemann put out a solo release, ‘Other Side Of Heaven’, in 1996, also on Ocean. Those are all the Kirkland family releases I am currently aware of.
